Black Box covering almost all of the viewable picture area on my TV screen

My tv (no matter what channel it is on) shows a large black box on it. I can see the outer edges around it and it shows the channel it's on, however, the black box in the middle of the screen was never there before. Did hubby push a button on the remote that he shouldn't have? Please help.
