How to hook up wireless headphones to TV and not hear tv speakers also

I have hooked up my headphones to the audio out in back of my tv, however, I can still hear the speakers. I have tryed to turn the speakers off by disabling the speaker switch through the menu. The speaker switch will not register anything but "on", in green or red. It never says, "off". What am I doing wrong?
