Hopefully find a fix for my two old friends

Can you help? I have 2 identical Sony VCRs (SLV_290) One failed some time ago, now the other is acting up. Both show code 3L 10 cc on their displays and will not operate in any way. One(the first to fail) showed 3L 11 Rc when it stopped during rewind. If I switch off and allow them to cool down they may work for one or two operations. Stop / start seems to be the main problem. Searching is almost impossible (switch off, play , search, switch off play and so on). Play and record are ok. If I can persuade them to resume their function I will keep them. If not I suppose a HD/DVD recorder will have to take their place. Thanks and I hope you can point me to a solution. Chris Tufts
