Would using a external flash unit off the hot shoe work?

My Sony DSC-V1 Pop Up Auto Flasj stopped working - all other components of the unit work fine. Is this a common problem? Does the Sony DSC-V1 Flash Hot Shoe work on a different triggering circuit? The pop up flash isn't very strong anyways, so a separate flash unit was planned anyways.
