JVC camcorder model GR-DVL520U. Cassette door stuck open. Error message E01

This is regarding a JVC camcorder model GR-DVL520U. The cassette door is stuck open - it refuses to close and I naturally do not apply force. When the unit is turned on - to "Auto" from "Off" - the LCD shows the error E01 "Unit in safeguard mode. Remove and reattach battery." Of course, that does nothing to help solve the problem. Also, with the cassette door still open, if the unit is turned to "Play" from "Off", I can see the spool moving (with no cassette). Please advise.
