Red timer light flashing but cannot turn TV on.

We think we left our TV on for a few hours while we went out. The TV is turned off but the red timer light is flashing continuously. We checked the website and only reference to this was to unplug it for 3 minutes which we did, and pressing the menu on the remote and the power button on the TV at the same time which we did with no luck. Replaced batteries in remote. Also removed plug from the surge plug and plugged directly into the wall, cannot turn the TV on at all even with the power button although the red light still flashing. When we unplug it and replug it you can hear a sound like it is coming on but it doesn't. Has anyone had similar problem. The help center referred us to a repairman who charges $350 just to look at it not including parts, etc.
