Is this a known problem I can fix?

My JVC HR-9800P is about 5 years old and worked perfectly, aside from twice in 5 yrs when it refused to show or record video - unplugging it for 10 minutes fixed it for 2 more years. I had another one that did the same thing. Now, when I feed it a tape, it buzzes, ejects then powers off. Unplugging it doesn't help. I like the drive, but if it's more to fix than buy.... JVC changed the tool free number to an international one ($5.49 to call) The local shops won't look at it - they say to trash it without testing it!
