I'm locked out of my tv.remote control will not work.I put in new batterys,asked at sears they said needed a new remote.I got one but can't get it to work.what is the code?

Do I have the tv on to set the remote or off?The tv will come on ok if you work it at the tv but not by the remote.It was working good till the batterys gave out.I put in the new batterys the next day. I get the red light on the remote to come on,but on tv. thankyou Dave
