Record and playback worked fine, now doesn't, and nothing changed except recharge of the battery.

I used my JVC GR AX300 (VHS-C)two weeks ago for 25 minutes of tape (underwater, with the camera in a custom Ikelite housing - no leaks or condensation - the housing does ot malfunction), and all worked excellently, even when played back through the camcorder. Today I thought I shot about 10 minutes of tape on a new cassette (elapsed time indicator was working), when the camera shut down. I turned it on again but it only stayed on for a few seconds. This repeated several times. When I returned home and played the cassette back, expecting at least 10 minutes of great shots, all I got was a full static image and no sound. I put the cassette back in the camcorder to play back and got the same. The camcorder also shut down again on its own, and the display keeps showing an EO3 message. Any idea what the problem is, and whether I can resolve it myself?
