Problem

I been using Sony Handycam TRV308 since 2002 and had no problems except for a sluggish zoom rocker. Suddenly, the autofocus will go crazy and won't return to normal until I turn power-off. When I re-start, the focus is perfect for awhile but then malfunctions again. This is ruining my taping. What could this be? Since it is intermittent and now only happens maybe 5% of the time, I can't send it for repairs and repairs would cost more than a new unit. Does Sony use infrared focus (active or passive)? Thanks.
