I had the same problem and pressed the case - just under the LCD screen on the back and "hey presto" the screen came back on.
I'm not really impressed by Sony but at least I've got my camera back for the time being.

Great suggestion to press the case just under the LCd display.
Thanks. Sony warned that displays were malfunctioning but this type (DSC-S40) was not on the list.
I wonder what Sony is doing about this kind of problems, their reputation is at stake.
