UNKNOWN WARNING INDICATOR (An eject symbol only) flashes when I try to record or play.

The camcord goes dead as if the batt is bad when I try to record,or play back tape. Have to reseat batt to cancel symbol,and try again. Have tried 3 batts;no change. The ac adapter also has to be reseated to cancel the symbol.Have tried new tape,cleaning len,checked for moisture condensation.What does the symbol mean? It is not listed in my manual.THANKS
