Trying to connect JVC GR D72U to laptop.

Hello everyone. I am having issues!!! Trying to connect a JVC GR D72U to my laptop. I first tried the USB Cables that came with the camcorder no luck. Read some posts online that suggest using firewire. Went to Best Buy bought a new firewire cable today and hooked it up, nothing happened. Firewire connection says it is connected but nothing happens. Atleast with the USB it would pop up saying a new device was found but now nothing. Using Windows Movie Maker to capture says: A Video Capture Device was not detected. Someone else says to boot the computer with it connected, tried that and it just loads normally. Anything special I am supposed to do with the firewire? I have tried plugging it up both ways, tried both ends in both devices nothing seems to work. Any ideas??? Thanks, Michael
