My camcorder will record sound, but does not show or record a picture. Is there anyway to fix this?

My camcorder recently stopped showing a picture. It will record sound, but the screen remains black - both in the view finder, the display screen and on the tape. The camera keeps prompting me to remove the lens cap, but the lens cap is not on the camera! What could be the problem????
