Wont record and stays in standby mode

My camera one day just stopped recording. I dont know if i hit somthing or some dirt got in there. Is there a simple fix to this? Sony wants a flat rate fee. Should I fix it or just by a new one. Camera worked great. It still plays back in VTR mode, just wont record. Any help would be great.
