Camcorder camera is black.

I have a JVC GR-DF430U camcorder which was brand new last summer. I used it for two weeks and it performed perfectly. Now I've turned it on again a year later and there is no camera image in the viewfinder or the flip screen. It just displays black and the "lens cap" warning. Battery's charged, fader is turned off. When I play back a tape it works fine. It's like the camera somehow faded to black and won't fade back to the camera.
