Poor recording quality & tape chewing

Greetings. I have a Sony VO-9850P U-Matic SP vtr that has a problem with recording. During recording, with new SP tapes, the vtr makes a 'glitching' noise. During playback of the recording the image quality is very bad with lines all over the screen. I looked at the tape and had creases on it. Playback with other tapes seems ok. Can anyone help?
