The two rear speakers sound strange.

The two rear speakers of my Sony SAVA 500 home theater system (about 4 years old) recently developed what sounds like audio tape flutter. It sounds like listening to music underwater. I have rechecked all the connections but can't correct this. This problem occurs no matter what surround settings are used. Can anyone help me with this?
