lens cap problem

I purchased this camera for my Hushand's birthday last June, we used it for vacation that month, then I put the camera up, and couldn't fine it for months.. I found it and recharged the battery, but won't show what your trying to film on the monitor, says lens cap. done everything the book says to do,but no luck. could you please help?
