JVC DR-MV5S not playing back DVDs, error message?

hi, I am hoping you can help me!! I have a JVC DVD / VHS recorder model DR-MV5S, only about a year old. Just recently it is unable to read standard store-bought discs, just for playback. I put the disc in to watch and it reads for awhile and then comes back with 'Disc Error" inn the window. It plays burned DVDs and VHS's are fine but the actual DVDs I buy at Best Buy, ect. (here in Florida) do not play. I purchased it through HSN. Do you have any ideas what I can do, apart from replacing it?
