JVC GR-DVL720U Tape won't eject when I open the cover.

When I open the cover, it makes a noise like it is checking for a tape (kind of like a back-and-forth noise) and if I try to record, it indicates there is no tape. The actual metal part that holds the tape doesn't open at all. Please help!
