How did i manage to fry my camera??!

The other night i was capturing video onto my computer, like i have done plenty of times in the passed. When i was finished, i turned the camera off. At that exact moment, i heard a "pssft" noise, and a tiny puff of smoke came out of the camera. I knew that wasn't something to get happy about, so i took out the battery and let it sit for a while. The next time i went to charge it, nothing happened. When i try to turn it on, nothing happens. I dont know much about electronics, and i just want to find out what happened, and whether or not it is a fixable issue. Any ideas?
