I ended up having the television repaired. It was at the shop for about 5 weeks (apparently JVC Canada is _really_ slow in shipping parts to repair shops).
This is the information that I received from the repair shop.
The technician ended up replacing (all prices in Canadian dollars)
* 2 capacitors (part number "XZCAP", $9.00 each)
* 1 integrated circuit (part number "XZIC", $12.50), and
* 1 transistor (part number DTC124EKA-X, 571234, $6.45).
Apparently the transistor received too much voltage and, of course, blew,
and took the other parts with it. The tech told me that it was highly
unlikely that the blown transistor was due to a line-surge, as the internal
fuse was still intact.
The total bill was $255.25 (with $39 in parts, that leaves about $216 for
the service call, labour, delivery charge, taxes for two levels of
government).
I hope that this helps, and good luck with your television.
