Unit has tape stuck inside and sound on TV side is just static.

I have no documentation on this unit but remember seeing somewhere that it is a common fault for a tape to get stuck inside. Is this the case or just hearsay. Sound problem on the TV side where all I can get is static. Do both of these faults relate to possible failure of power board? Or is there a more sinister problem?
