black box on most of the lower half of TV

I have this older 27 in JVC. It has the time posted in the right hand corner. When the electricity goes off, the time has to be reset. This time I did what I always do to get the right time on the TV. Nothing different {I thought}!!! But, this time there appeared ON THE SCREEN a black box. When you push the menu button the black box will disappear for maybe 15 seconds. The same with some of the other functions. The black box will disappear for a little while, 15 to 20 seconds. Nothing I do will make it go away. If I record with the VCR, the black box is not in the picture. I have tried, what seems to me, everything. The box won't go away. Can You help me.
