Simple guidelines needed on downloading movies. What software, method, etc

I have just had DVD Drive added to my computer in order to download movies and music. I, apparently have all the software - seems like loads of different icons on my desktop which are confusing. I don't understand how its done, or the methodology involved. I need simple step-by-step guidelines - don't mind being spoken to like a 5-yr old!
