need help with cable connection - blue screen all the time

We have problems getting securely connected with the cable(coming through a VCR/DVD player) - almost since we bought the TV. We would have to wiggle the connection until the channel came on - often with a fuzzy picture. Finally, the connector at the back broke off, and we just got it fixed. Now we are still having the same problem - is there a special cable with a long wire sticking out that is needed? Thanks Kevin
