I need help with recording dvd's so tha they will play in U.S.A.

I recorded from footage taken using a Canon digital mini cam,(onto the Pioneer dvr) and also items of interest shown on t.v in New Zealand to send to a friend in U.S.A. They were Initialised and finalised. They played on both my dvd player and on my computer at work, but will not play in America.I also sent 2 commercially recorded dvd's, one on n.z. tourism and another cartoon type.These both played alright. Can someone help me. Am I recording the dvd's wrongly or is it a zoning problem? I know U.S. is zone 1 and N.Z is zone 4
