Menu box won't go off, blocks picture

On my 32" JVC AV32050, when you press the menu button, a black box appears in the middle of the screen with menu options. When you press "exit", it normally goes away. Now, when you press "exit", the menu options disappear, but the black box they were in remains, blocking the picture. I have tried everything including changing remote batteries, unplugging the set, and even routing the cable box thru Video 1 and 2 and it is still there. Any ideas? Thanks
