How do I get the player out of standby mode? Put tape in played fine. Hit stop button and now stuck in Standby mode.

My bro gave me a Sony VP-2070 3/4 player because I had some old tapes. Put the tape in hit play all was fine. Hit stop button and machine is in standby mode. Won't eject tape, play or rw. Any suggestions, or is the machine just not working properly. Thanks.
