unable to view image via the view finder. Does not play when connected to vcr.

I have not used my CCD-TR9 for about a year. Recently I took it out to show some video's via the vcr hook up and found that this connection did not work. Upon checking further, I found that when I put in a new tape and tried to tape an event, all I could see through the viewfinder was whiteness. Does anyone know what the problem might be?
