Cassette door will not open or close. Error code E01 on screen

My JVC digital video camera model no. GR-DVL300U. The cassette door is not opening completely without me powering on and off over and over again. It seems to be getting stuck part way. I am getting an error code E01. I really don't want to have to spend hundreds of dollars for repair. Why can't things work for more than three years. Are they meant to be disposible?
