Model CA-MXGB5

I have a JVC Compact Component System, Model CA-MXGB5, that was purchased last year. When the unit is powered on it goes throught it's startup procedure and issues a "Status Protect" message, then shuts down. It is less than a year old but I have lost the receipt and to fix it will cost $$$.$$ Any suggestions how to fix the problem without going to the service center would be appreciated.
