Not able to turn the Volume down

Can anyone help, for some reason the TV's volume is so high, I am unable to turn it down as it states that it is on 0 already, I have cable, DVD & Video also and have checked to make sure the volume is not set on them.....really confused this is our only TV and it is so loud the kids cant watch it. Any ideas appreciated.
