Player doesn't work right

I received a portable DVD player last year for X-Mass. My son purchaased it in Japan. A bout 15 minutes intop a DVD it starts to stutter and then just stops. Sensless to try to get it repaired since they are so cheap but it seems like a shame to just chuck it. Any idea what's wrong? I wouldn't be afraid of trying to repair myself before I get rid of it.
