My webcam won't work

Help!!!Reply fast!

My mercury webcam won't work! It says its unplugged but i have it attached to the usb port. There is also an extra cord that doesn't seem to go anywhere.It is about the size of a headphone cord but is attached to the webcam.Help!

when i choose invite on my yahoo messenger i do not get the ok prompt to establish connection.....it does nothing. why?
