JVC GR-DVL510 displays "no tape" warning(s) whether a tape is inserted or not.

Hi, Camcorder is about 4 years old and hadn't been used for several months. Recently I put a tape in to record a family event and got the "flashing tape" on the LCD. If I pushed record button or attemted a playback of a recorded tape, I would also get the "No Tape!" message on the LCD. I've tried removing the battery, changing to a different tape, etc, to no avail.
