Sound problems with Movie project

I am making movies from old 16 mm movie and they have been digitized. The sound in Imovie is fine, then in the DVD project (IDVD) the opening sequence (musioc and slide show) is fine, but when I play the three segemtns after the opening sequence it sounds like they are talking into a bundle of cloth. I looked at the project on IDVD and the sound there is fine. Where is the problem. I am using an Imac with a superdrive.
