Camcorder stops and eats tape

We have a JVC compact VHS camcorder. We bought a new battery for it yesterday hoping it would resolve the issue of the error code that keeps coming up: safeguard mode, remove and replace battery. The camcorder has eaten 5 tapes so far. This seems to be a big issue with JVC camcorders, from what I've read on this list. Is there a solution? Linda
