trv17 wants me to eject tape every 10 mins

desperate help needed...bought a tr17 on ebay...the unit will stop every ten minutes or so with the error message " c:33:21" which means i need to eject the tape..when i eject the tape and put it back in it works fine, for ten mins, but i can't eject the tape every ten mins?!?!!? WHY is it asking me to eject the tape in the first place? is this common? anything I can do before i take a $300 loss?
