Samsung scl906 eats tape!!!!

My samsung scl906 has only been used for one occasion, and worked just fine, I 've had it for 1 year, and now I put a tape in and I get a damaged tape message on my screen. I've tried different brands of tape, with the same result. I took the cover off and it ate one tape, but the next few times it worked fine, I don't want to leave the cover off just so I can record. Also it seemed to work better when I used the adapter as opposed to a fully charged battery. Please help.
