My sony handycam DCR-HC20 is showing an error message (e 61:10) and the zoom won't work and there's no focus!

My sony handycam DCR-HC20 is showing an error message (e 61:10) and the zoom won't work and there's no focus--the picture is all blurry. I've read a little about the whack method (??) but where on the barrel do I hit, how many times, and how hard? Anyone with any help...I'd appreciate it! I don't want to send it in to Sony to pay big $$$ and I LOVE this camera! Please help!
