compression in Cleaner

Hi all, New to this forum, so i hope someone will be able to offer me a solution to a problem that has been driving me mad for 2 days. Basically I have a sequence laid down in FCP. I need to crop the sides as they are some dodgy cutaways in the edit. SO I exported the file from FCP as a Quicktime uncompressed @ 720 x 576. Brought this into cleaner and crop manually and entered in the setting I had been using while testing in FCP. I entered them into the ENCODE area, exported file @ 320 x240. Trouble is the video looks awful. Odd thing is, if I use the exact same codec settings and export the sequence directly from FCP @320 x 240, the quality is spot on. I find this terribly frustrating, am I doing something wrong? Why do two programmed react so differently to the same compression settings? Please help! eiregirl
