videos recorded on my video recorder only transmit sound when played on a different recorder - blue screen.

I have an JVC HR-XVS30EK DVD player & video cassette recorder which is linked up to my JVC AV28X10EK television and they work very happily together. My problem is that if I record something on the video, although it plays fine on my television, if I try to play the same video elsewhere (if I record something for school), I get the sound but just a blue screen. I have tried different tvs and different video players with the same result. I feel sure that I have some setting wrong but it's far too hard for me to begin to understand.
