Problem with Digital Image Stabilization

My brand new camcorder seems to jump from one stabilized image to the next. Certainly when zoomed in but also when zoomed out (much less but still..). I find it very anoying but I wonder: is my camera failing or is this a disadvantage of "Digital Image Stabilization". I am used to "Steady Shot" on my old analog Sony camcorder and some people tell me that it makes a much smoother panning than "DIS". Anyone recognizing this problem?
