sony dvd handycam disc format error

i have a sony handycam. i took pictures of my newborn son at the hospital. we played the disk a few times and it was fine but when i went to play it the last time it said format error. im not sure how to fix this and i dont wanna format it again because i will lose the important pics. does anyone know what to do? thanks
