There is a black box on my screen... I can only view what's not covered over and that's not much.

I loaned my tv to a friend and just got it back. There is a black box in the middle of the screen and I don't have a remote for the tv so I'm limited to the front of the tv for troubleshooting. This black box takes up most of the screen, however you can see a picture around the edge of the screen where the black box does not exists. My thinking is some how my friend managed to turn on or locked the parent code. Please help.
