memory card problems for the slim ps2

i just got a simline and i started playin my old psone games on it oviously i order to save i need a psne memory card but wen i put it in the ps2 acts as if i never put it in , wen i try a ps2 memory card the psone game acts as if thee is no memory card in the slot any sugestions to why this happens?
