PS2 flip top is making noise

I just got a flip top for my version 1 ps2. Right when i tried booting a original ps2 game, its starts making this loud clicking noises. But when i take out the white magnetic piece and place it on top of the disc manually, the game boots just fine with no noises. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be?
