Checking out songs in WMA format.

You can transfer songs in WMA format, right? I am having trouble with this. I have two songs, a Ryan Cabrera song that I got from his website and the Joss Stone song used in a GAP commercial which I got from the GAP website. It says something like it doesn't have the license for playback. Is it because those tracks are protected? Is there any way I can get the license? This might sound stupid, but I don't want to have to pay for anything to download or whatever. I might also try copying the songs to a CD and then transferring them, but I'm not even sure if that would work. Will it? Plese help!!!!
